Shrimp and Banana – Life’s a Gas Mixed Media

£450.00

This wall mounted sculpture is a one-third size of the human skull in the gas mask. The colours were chosen as a deliberate echo of the classic foam sweets of childhood, ‘shrimps’ and ‘bananas’. With a nod to Warhol, who once said: ‘all I ever really want is sugar’, it is a fusion of the whimsical and the self-destructive.

This piece draws direct inspiration from the original sculpture by Simon Fearnhamm ‘Life’s a Gas’, created in 2017.

The original sculpture is a full size skeleton seated on an old oil drum. It was conceived as a call to arms: a reflection of the way we treat our world.

The wanton disregard for the well-being of our planet has left wide areas polluted and poisoned. Around the drum are sketched out the continents in blisters and stains with mankind sitting on top, his bones melting. The figure represents humanity breathing in the toxic world he has created.
